Reception

Allen Divers of Anime News Network comments that the male character designs of the One Piece manga are "often quite varied and unique", while the female ones become "a bit repetitive". They further note that, as the characters are "defined by what they seek", there is little room "for actual development", but they also point out that the series is driven by its battles in which the main characters each take their "turn in the spotlight".[44] Todd Douglass, Jr. of DVD talk simply states that the series' characters have a lot of charm.[45]

In a review of The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventures in Alabasta, Carl Kimlinger of ANN describes the visual style of One Piece as "unconventional" with "grotesquely exaggerated expressions, simple eyes, big mouths and bigger teeth", "supremely ugly supporting characters and skinny, gangly-limbed main cast" and comments that "it's all amazingly distinctive, utterly appropriate, and surprisingly cool—in a goofy kind of way." In the same review, Kimlinger notes that "Funimation's English dub is light-years better than the 4Kids debacle", "unusually accurate, professional, and largely enjoyable, which is far, far more than can be said of the previous dub", but notes that Funimation's version of "Crocodile loses his sepulchral charisma" and that "the original's fine dance on the edge of mawkish sentimentality is disrupted often enough by less-than-stellar acting". They also state that "Colleen Clinkenbeard's Luffy is more a generic spunky kid than a personality in his own right, really coming to life only during the action scenes during which she does a fine job of being darned cool."[46]

In another review of The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventures in Alabasta, Dustin Somner of Blu-ray.com comments that the Japanese and Funimation voice-acting is "fairly good, but not exceptional" and sometimes "overly zany".[47]

In a review of the second DVD release of 4Kids Entertainment's dub, Douglass notes "the daunting cast of characters, both good and bad", which "vary from cool and collected to rampaging psychopaths" as "one of the appealing factors" of the anime. In the same review, Douglass said that "Some of the voices were pretty irritating ... with a lot of high-pitches and over exaggerated speech."[48]

Brigitte Schönhense of Splashcomics comments that the "brilliant" (German: "genial") flashbacks into the characters' pasts make them so "likeable and lovable" (German: "sympathisch und liebenswert") and that they are the manga's real strength.[49][50]

Mania Entertainment writer Jarred Pine comments that Oda's characters are "whacky" and that his "bizarre" character designs create "wonderful characterizations and personalities". He notes the "well illustrated" facial expressions and says that "it's the whacky characterizations and designs that makes One Piece its own".[51]

In a review of Funimation Entertainment's second DVD release for Mania Entertainment, Bryce Coulter comments that "One Piece's bizarre character designs will keep your attention as they can be very random and often memorable. Not the prettiest, but it will definitely capture your attention."[14]

Merchandise

Several types of merchandise have been produced based on the likeness of the characters in the One Piece series, such as cushions, clothing, towels, key chains, and clocks,[24][25][26][27][28][29] as well as several lines of figurines, action figures and plush dolls,[30][31][32][33][34][35][36] including crossovers with other series.[37] Many characters are also featured on trading cards from the One Piece Collectible Card Game and other products ranging from calendars to bath salts.[38][39][40][41][42][43]

He also has a deep respect for his ancestor's best friend, "Montblanc Noland", to whom he feels obligated to because of Noland's deeds, friendship to Calgara, and unfortunate fate. While he means well, his determination sometimes tends to blind him, causing Wiper to become more violent and push himself beyond his physical limits. Wyper wields a bazooka which he calls the "Burn Bazooka", because it has a "Flavor Dial" and a "Flame Dial" inside, which the Flavor Dial can launch exploding gas, then the Flame Dial sets alight. Wyper also has a "Reject Dial" tied to his right palm, which is ten times stronger and more life threatening than an "Impact Dial". He needs to be corrected in every single instance, whereupon he will frown and cry, "So careless!" Despite his strange habits, he is still very serious and ruthless. As the result, he appears fearless, childish, arrogant and apathetic. His lifestyle is relaxed and hedonistic. She becomes more and more courageous, speaking her mind and not being afraid of her people's "God" Eneru as they struggle to fight him. The major reason why Conis was able to do so was because of her sense of justice and morality, her heart breaking loss of her father, and the love for her people. She is voiced by Rieko Takahashi in the Japanese version. In the English dub, she is voiced by Laura Bailey for Funimation.

Ms. Valentine ate a paramecia Devil Fruit called the Kilo-Kilo Fruit (キロキロの実, Kilo Kilo no Mi?) which allows her to change her mass to anything between one and ten-thousand kilograms (renamed pounds in the 4Kids dub). She uses this power to crush her opponents, or to make her light enough to glide through the air using her umbrella. She is voiced by Fumiko Orikasa in the Japanese version. Ms. Golden Week is a young girl. Her personality is that of one laid back to the point of fault. She, for instance, is perfectly fine with having a picnic during an ongoing battle. Another example of this was when she sat a few feet away from a cup of tea, and apparently was too lazy to walk over to it and pick it up herself. In battle, Ms. Golden Week uses a paint palette and paint brush. If the paint Ms. Golden Week uses touches anybody, then their emotions and behavior are changed, depending what color paint touches them. She is voiced by Akiko Nakagawa in the Japanese version. In the English dub, she is voiced by Cherami Leigh for Funimation.

Paula is calm and mild tempered partner who has a funny way of walking that over exaggerates the "sexy" hip swing that often is used to display a sexy woman. She is not easily amused by the antics of others and remains unweathered in any situation. She displayed a tendency to play with her victims, but nonetheless, she is a lethal fighter who does not shy away from violence. Paula ate a paramecia Devil Fruit called the Spike-Spike Fruit (トゲトゲの実, Toge Toge no Mi?) which allows her to turn parts of her body into spikes. She was originally voiced by Ako Mayama in the Japanese version, and is currently voiced by Yuko Tachibana. Eventually, the truth of Crocodile's actions are known by the rebels and royal guard. The Marines arrest Crocodile and strip him of all titles and permissions granted by the World Government, and Baroque Works is disbanded. He is voiced by Kōzō Shioya in the Japanese version.ep.385

Camie

Camie (ケイミー, Keimī?) is a kissing gourami mermaid.ch.490 She aspires to become a fashion designer with the help from her pet starfish and master, Pappagu. Camie has the habit of being easily shocked. Camie and Pappagu also have the most unfortunate luck of getting eaten by Sea Kings almost every time. Camie also has the unfortunate luck of getting captured almost every time, though it is likely, because she is so naive and gullible.ch.492 She is voiced by Haruna Ikezawa in the Japanese version.

Daz Bonez also seems to have some views, such as the notion that having friendships makes one weak. On the inverse side, he also does not seem to care for grudges either. He ate a paramecia Devil Fruit called the Dice-Dice Fruit (スパスパの実, Supa Supa no Mi?) which allows his body to become bladed steel. He was defeated by Zoro and sent to Impel Down on Level 4 after the Alabasta Revolution. He assists Crocodile and, unintentionally, Monkey D. Galdino

Galdino (ギャルディーノ, Gyarudīno?) is a former Officer Agent of Baroque Works and was under the codename of "Mr. 3" (ミスター・スリー, Misutā Surī?), alongside his former partner "Ms. Golden Week". Crocodile only allowed Galdino to hold his position in the organization as Mr. 3 because of his cunning intelligence and that Mr. 4 was too mentally slow. Otherwise, he would be lower ranked.[citation needed] After being sent to Impel Down on Level 2, he escaped with the assistance of Buggy, whom he shared a kindred bond with, and Luffy, an alliance that, while weak, proves itself on some occasions. In Impel Down, he proves his overall lack of fighting spirit many times. He acts like a coward and backs up Buggy's escape plan over Luffy's much more dangerous rescue mission. When Magellan reaches the fleeing group during their escape, Galdino shows a moment of bravery, but admits he could only hold it together for a brief moment. He takes part at the Battle of Marineford alongside the other Impel Down escapees. He is shown to be close friends with Bon Clay ch.571 He is voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama in the Japanese version of the anime. As opposed to the ideas of his fellow agents, Bon Clay values friendship highly, as evidenced by his selfless sacrifice to allow the Straw Hat Pirates to escape Alabasta. As a former Officer Agent of Baroque Works, Bon Clay was the only agent without a female partner,ch.155 because as a transvestite, he fills both roles by himself. Likewise, his codename is a composite of a male Baroque Works agent's number, "Mr. 2", and a female agent's holiday, "Bon Clay", which is the end of the Bon Festival. After the Alabasta Revolution To Save Luffy and his crew, Bon Clay was captured and arrested by Captain Hina of the Marines, and was put into Impel Down on Level 3. He eventually became Luffy's ally and sacrifices himself to let Luffy escape Impel Down. It is unknown if Bon Clay was killed by Chief Warden Magellan or not. Fifty years before the current storyline, Crocus met the "Rumbar Pirates" as they entered the Grand Line through Reverse Mountain from the West Blue. Crocus promised to take care of their pet whale "Laboon" while they journeyed the Grand Line. However despite the Rumbar Pirates' promise to come back after two to three years, Crocus didn't meet them again at the promised time and waited much longer. Twenty-four years later, Crocus met the Roger Pirates who came into the Grand Line through Reverse Mountain. Learning that their captain, Gol D. Roger, was suffering from an incurable disease, Crocus was asked by the pirates to join them as their doctor in order to help stabilize Roger's health as they journeyed the Grand Line. Wanting to find out what had happened to the Rumbar Pirates, Crocus accepted their offer and joined them. After Roger was executed, Crocus returned to Laboon and his home in the entrance to the Grand Line. Crocus is a very tough and powerful fighter. He uses harpoons as his weapon of choice, and is even strong enough to kill Sea Kings. He is voiced by Goro Naya in the Japanese version. In the English dub, he is voiced by Jerry Russell for Funimation.

(formerly, "King of the Pirates' Right Hand" (海賊王の右腕, Kaizoku-Ō no Migiude?)) is the former first mate of the "Roger Pirates". Rayleigh is light hearted, casual and fun loving, much like his captain Gol D. Roger was supposed to have been. In the past he was shown to have been intolerable to the antics of the younger members arguing, and took the position of crew disciplinarian very seriously. Despite once being enemies with the Whitebeard Pirates, Rayleigh seems to have great respect for their captain, like Roger, and shed a tear for Whitebeard's passing. He has settled down on the Sabaody Archipelago, where he works as a coating mechanic.ch.500 Rayleigh has King Ambition (覇王色の覇気, Haōshoku no Haki?), a so far unexplained ability that can, among other things, make weak people pass out. He can aim it at multiple targets in his vicinity.ch.503 It also allows him to render users of logia Devil Fruit users vulnerable to physical attack.ch.597 Rayleigh has shown the ability to use a sword. Although, he does comment he is out of practice. Rayleigh admits that the former Roger Pirates know of what happened during the Blank Century.ch.507 He has been friends with Hachi for twenty years, ever since he was saved by him, when he was cast away at sea.ch.506 He has trained Luffy on how to master the power of Haki . Despite being proud, Jimbei appears to put his priorities and principles over his honor, and is not above retreating from an otherwise unfinished battle (even being shamed or openly mocked by an opponent) if it meant for the sake of the greater good. While he is a fishman with great emotional control, he is empathetic, and understanding of the pains of others, such as being brought to tears when Luffy breaks down emotionally in front of him after he has awoken from the Battle of Marineford. In exchange for the World Government granting him Warlord-status, Jimbei disbanded his pirate crew, the "Sunny Pirates" (who were formerly led by "Fisher Tiger" until he died), part of which became the Arlong Pirates.ch.69 Though the World Government knows him as a pirate-hating pirate, he has a weakness for Whitebeard and his men, due to Whitebeard's declaration that Fishman Island is his territory and thus under his protection, which scares off slave traders and pirates and brought peace to the area.ch.529 For refusing to raise a hand against Whitebeard, Jimbei was thrown into the world's greatest prison, Impel Down in Level 6, until he agrees to go to war against Whitebeard.ch.523 However, he remains adamant and eventually resigns his position.ch.557 Jimbei is a master of "Fishman Karate". His strikes are so strong, that he does not even need to make physical contact with an enemy as the very air will blow them away. Jimbei also displays being able to manipulate water as if it were a tangible cloth through Fishman Karate. Crocodile

Crocodile (クロコダイル, Kurokodairu?), nicknamed "Sir" Crocodile (サー・クロコダイル, Sā Kurokodairu?), is a member of The Seven Warlords of the Seach.113 and, unbeknown to the World Government,ch.169 the boss of the criminal organization Baroque Worksch.113 under the codename of "Mr. 0" (ミスター・ゼロ, Misutā Zero?)ch.127, and his former partner was Nico Robin, who was under the codename of "Ms. All-Sunday". Crocodile lacks almost any code of honor and does not see the point in offering those who are about to die a chance of dying honorably. Although he has referred to many of his opponents' struggles as worthless in the past, he hasn't referred to his opponents' struggles, since he first fought Luffy. Crocodile has shown to be extremely cynical and cold-hearted. He displays complete disregard of the romantic pirate lifestyle, stating that all the things the King of the Pirates once had mean nothing to him. He places more importance in military power. Crocodile believes that only ignorant fools declare their grandiose dreams. Several times, he refers to trust and faith in others as idiotic. He has stated that he has done away with countless people like that. He goes so far as to mock those who fight for others, making their defeats to him all the more harsh. He also, by his own admission, admits that he is not rational at times. After the Straw Hat Pirates thwart Crocodile's plans to overthrow the Alabasta Kingdom with Baroque Works, he is stripped of his Warlord statusch.211 and sent to the government prison Impel Down in Level 6ch.413.vol.19–23 He ate a logia Devil Fruit called the Sand-Sand Fruit (スナスナの実, Suna Suna no Mi?), which allows him to manipulate sand,ch.170 absorb moisture with his right hand,ch.201 and as long as he is not wet, he can turn his body into sand.ch.199 Crocodile also has a large golden alloy hook in place of a left hand,ch.160 that contains a potent poison and a dagger underneath.ch.204 Crocodile's current bounty is 81,000,000 Berries. Killer's weapon of choice are dual hand curved blades that are capable of spinning, or used for cutting. Killer's current bounty is 162,000,000 Berries. He is voiced by Kenji Hamada in the Japanese version.

Eustass Kid

Captain Eustass Kid (ユースタス・キッド, Yūsutasu Kiddo?)  is the captain of the Kid Pirates, and one of the Eleven Supernovas. Kid is notorious for causing a huge amount of civilian casualties. He is generally either angry or making sarcastic jokes. When he feels that he's been insulted, he is quick to resort to violence, like attacking people for staring at him. Oddly, Kid seems to be quite sensitive to being mocked, insulted, or glanced at. Despite Kid's violent nature, he knows how to restrain himself when in a tight situation. Kid ate an unnamed paramecia Devil Fruit connected to magnetism. He can attract metal to both arms, and he is able to repel metal using both arms as well. Kid can also use his power to levitate hundreds of metallic weapons and various metal objects, which can gather and connect to his right hand, taking the shape of a giant arm, which possesses a hand and fingers. Kid's current bounty is 315,000,000 Berries. He is voiced by Daisuke Namikawa in the Japanese version.

Drake, Trafalgar Law, Scratchmen Apoo, Killer, Jewelry Bonney, Capone Bege, Roronoa Zoro, and Urouge.

Inazuma

Inazuma (イナズマ?) is a Revolutionary commander and is a servant for the "Kamabakka Queendom" on "Peachy Island".ch.539  As a male, Inazuma is mostly serious, calm and level-headed, almost emotionless. He only shows emotions during critical moments. As a female, Inazuma is warm and cheerful, in sharp contrast with her male persona. While Inazuma's appearance is different depending on the current gender, Inazuma's basic appearance is the same for both genders. He dresses in clothes and has hair that is orange on one side and is white on the other side. Inazuma ate a paramyhtia Devil Fruit called the Snip-Snip Fruit (チョキチョキの実, Choki Choki no Mi?)  and thus gained the ability to turn his hands into anything-cutting, giant scissors, and to deform things cut with them as if they were paper.ch.540 He is voiced by Kenji Hamada (male) and Umeka Shōji (female) in the Japanese version.

Emporio Ivankov

Emporio Ivankov (エンポリオ・イワンコフ, Enporio Iwankofu?), nicknamed "Miracle Person" (奇跡の人, Kiseki no Hito?), is a Revolutionary commander, and queen of the "Kamabakka Queendom" on "Peachy Island". Ivankov is an effeminate, cross-dressing man. He also has a tendency to proclaim the exact opposite of a statement he has just said, with people believing this is his sense of humor (such as saying that he wouldn't mind being called "crap", before hastily announcing that he would not be referred to as such). He also believes that people should be what they want to be whether it be a man, woman, or both. Ivankov is very loud and open, even perverse, and often shouts "Hee Haw!". Ivankov ate a paramecia Devil Fruit called the Horm-Horm Fruit (ホルホルの実, Horu Horu no Mi?), which allows him to control the hormones of the human body. For example, he can remodel a human from the inside, which allows them to change all physical aspects, including: sex, growth, skin pigment, and many other things.ch.537–539 Ivankov has shown his own martial arts style, called the "Newkama Kenpo". He was voiced by Norio Imamura, but was later replaced by Mitsuo Iwata in the Japanese version. - Ivankov also bears a strong resemblance to Dr. Frank-N-Furter.

Monkey D. Dragon

Monkey D. Dragon (モンキー・D・ドラゴン, Monkī Dī Doragon?), nicknamed "World's Most Dangerous Criminal" (世界最悪の犯罪者, Sekai Saiaku no Hanzaisha?) and "Revolutionary" Dragon (革命家ドラゴン, Kakumeika Doragon?), is the infamous Revolutionary leader who has been attempting to overthrow the World Government, but is known to the public only as Dragon.ch.432 Also unknown to the public are his family ties; he is the son of Garp and father of Luffy.ch.432  Dragon's personality is mostly unknown due to the many mysteries surrounding him, save for an apparent love for freedom and a belief in fate, traits of a D. But unlike the other people with the Spirit of D., he has a stern and serious demeanor, however in all of his appearances thus far, except at Gol D. Roger's execution, he is seen with a smug grin on his face. Dragon speaks as though he is a mystic of sorts and apparently doesn't like to speak of, or be asked about, his past. He also has a strange habit of always looking towards the East Blue when in the wind. Dragon is the World Government's greatest enemy and is the most wanted man in the world. It is also strongly hinted that Dragon was behind the events at Logue Town, such as causing a lightning bolt, the sudden, severe rain, and blowing strong winds. Whether or not these attributes are from a Devil Fruit that may allow him to control the weather, or if it was even the result of his own power, is unknown. He is voiced by Hidekatsu Shibata in the Japanese version. In the English dubs, he is voiced by Dan Green for 4Kids, and by Bryan Massey for Funimation.

The Revolutionaries

The "Revolutionary Army" (革命軍, Kakumeigun?) is an army of globally operating revolutionaries, openly aiming to overthrow the World Government. To that end, they incite revolutions in countries around the world.

Big Mom

Big Mom (ビッグ・マム, Biggu Mamu?)  is one of the Four Emperors. As one of the Four Emperors, Big Mom is one of the four (now three, due to Whitebeard's death) most powerful pirates in the world. Along with Kaido, Big Mom has yet to make an actual appearance. It was also hinted that she may be the mother of Lola (from the Thriller Bark ark) although she was only referred to as "mamma" it was said that she was very powerful.

Kaidou

Kaidou (カイドウ, Kaidō?) is one of the Four Emperors. Not much is known about Kaidou's personality, but he appears to be a ruthless warrior, slaying Gecko Moria's entire crew ten years ago and was planning to attack Whitebeard during the latter's attempt to save Ace from execution. As one of the Four Emperors, Kaidou is one of the strongest pirates in the world. He attempted to take Whitebeard's life, which is something that few would dare, and managed to clash with Shanks. He also once fought on equal grounds against the Warlord, Moria, until he somehow gained the upper hand and became victorious.

Whitebeard Allies

There are forty-three infamous pirate captains (and so their crews) from the New World who has a friendly relationship with Whitebeard Pirates. The most known and only shown at the moment are "Bohemian Knight" Douma (ドーマ, Dōma?) (who fought against Ace in the past, and his defeat under him gives Luffy's brother his rank as 2nd Division Commander), "Thunder Lord" McGuy (マクガイ, Makugai?) (a powerful man with a lightning bolt shaped black mustache), the Decalvan Brothers (ディカルバン兄弟, Dikaruban Kyōdai?) (a pair of ugly twins), "Great Whirlpool Spider" Squard (スクアード, Sukuādo?) (a man who fought in the past against Gol D. Roger whose crew was eliminated by the Pirate King), the "Little" Oars Jr. (オーズJr., Ōzu Juniā?) (a descendant from Oars, the most powerful zombie of Gecko Moria's army) and the "Ice Witch" Whitey Bay (ホワイティ・ベイ, Howaiti Bei?) (a beautiful woman commanding an icebreaker ship). They were all under command of Whitebeard during his war against the Marines and The Seven Royal Warlords of the Sea. During this war Monkey D. Luffy, Emporio Ivankov, Buggy and Galdino became too allies of Whitebeard. The former Warlord Jimbei is also an ally of Whitebeard as he refused to battle against him and lost his title as a Warlord of the Sea. In the past Whitebeard freed his people from the World Government.

Rakuyou, the 7th division commander, is a man with blonde dreadlocks who wields a spiked ball and chain. Namur, the 8th division commander, is a shark-type Fishman wearing a T-shirt who is adept in hand-to-hand combat.
